GC Detective Flies Like The Phoenix
I have not recently posted to my blog because I have been troubled with the technical difficulties we have had making the Google Cash Detective the efficient competitive intelligence software that it is today. I staked my reputation on the software’s success, and we have faced challenges that made me question my judgment.
The Internet is a wild frontier where great ideas attract the time and energy of skilled people who make these ideas a reality. The Internet changes rapidly and the technical requirements needed to survive in this changing environment crush all but the most determined entrepreneurs. I know because I have faced these challenges head on.
As most of you know I marketed the launch of the most powerful competitive research tool to be used on the Internet today. The Google Cash Detective has been a long time in the making, and we have had our share of challenges.
The Google Cash Detective has been designed and redesigned from the bottom up to deliver the most reliable competitive intelligence information in the affiliate marketing world. This type of growth and change is never easy, and when such growth and change occurs under the pressure and scrutiny of a wide audience, one must rely heavily on his determination to survive.
In my post today, I will tell you exactly what over 500 people are doing with the Google Cash Detective and what they are learning from our web training seminars. For the technically minded, I will describe how powerful our technology is compared to other alternatives, and most importantly for those who might be spared similar follies, I will tell you some of the problems that we have had along the way.
It has always been my both my personal and business mission to educate and inform. My time spent today is no different than when I dreamed up the automation that the Google Cash Detective and Automator make possible. I am sharing my knowledge to help people to help themselves, and I am sharing my experiences to educate and inform.
What is unique about today’s post is that I am going to highlight some of the things that went wrong in addition to what you usually hear which is how everything went smoothly and according to plan.
So let’s cut to the chase. Every day, the Google Cash Detective crawls Google, noting every PPC add, the display and destination URLs, and each ad’s running duration for nearly 2 million keywords. As a cluster of dedicated servers record the critical data, a complex parsing system imports this data into a database that all of our customers can simultaneously access.
As customers add new keywords, they are fed into our global database, and these keywords are subsequently entered into Google three times a day to deliver a very accurate description of what is happening in your niche market. One of the most amazing benefits of this behemoth task is that you can search for keywords that are being used by your competitors, keywords that you haven’t even thought of, keywords that are the missing link between you and your future customers.
This solution is incredibly powerful because it leverages the knowledge of all those who are in the Google Cash Detective Community and it places that knowledge literally at your finger tips. For the sake of comparison, SpyFu.com, which offers a similar approach to competitive analysis, maintains a comparable number of keywords in their database, but the data is only updated once per quarter. That’s 4 times per year. We are updating daily!
When we built the Google Cash Detective, we had no idea how many people would start using it and how their combined keyword data would create such a unique and sought after resource. In fact, we first envisioned the software to be used by individuals with access to nothing more than their own data. After all, I was just trying to automate my research process, and expedite the rollout of my new campaigns.
Our first release was somewhat problematic. We launched nearly an hour late, causing a deluge of inquiries, and we had people on the other side of the world unable to purchase because their address was not accepted by our payment processor. We had a bug in our latest version of the software that we launched with, that was causing problems on our recommended host, and I was getting nervous.
Despite these problems, we quickly realized that we were on the cusp of something very big. We outsourced an installation team from YBrandt in India to address our installation difficulties on the variety of servers found around the globe, each running different software versions and configurations.
This brute force approach only helped in some cases. We realized we were not going to meet the needs of our customers. The technical support to keep everyone running was too much. We had no choice but to face these challenges, alter our approach, and expand our scope.
n the mean time, refunds were belabored by a predatory payment processor, Card Service International (CSI), who would not release any of the funds that we had taken in, and further informed us that refunds were being processed when they were not.
We literally had to refund people from our own money without having access to the money we had collected from customer payments. To make things worse, our shared hosting solution fell apart when the flood of orders placed numerous customers on the same servers causing resource overages, ultimately shutting down service.
So there we are, sold out in less than two hours, with only a few successful installations and numerous people requesting refunds. We had an error in an affiliate script that ultimately required us to spend days correlating orders to the JV partners who had promoted us. Some cards were charged more than once, and I was scrambling to correct as many problems as I could.
We had over 3000 people on a waiting list for the software, so we wanted to keep everyone happy and refund those who didn’t want to wait for the software to be fixed. My reputation was on the line, and the last thing I wanted to do was tarnish it!
Unable to stomach the delays with our payment processor, I bucked up and paid all of the JV partners who had brought in the customers, prior to being paid for the software myself. Sadly, some of those customers refunded, so I ended up paying JV partners for sales that I never collected on. As a result, I lost a significant amount of money.
As I stewed about the losses, the Google Cash Detective was being redesigned to run as a hosted service. We could operate the software more effectively on a server that we controlled more easily than tweaking it and providing updates to the numerous server types we had encountered after the first sale.
To our programming teams’ credit, we had a new version operational in less than a month. We also had a new payment processor (Power Pay) that assured us that we would not encounter the same problems that we had with CSI. Despite the problems with our first sale, we sold out again in less than 3 days.
We created a script to migrate data to the new platform for those who had already begun to use the software, and we made every effort to quickly identify and correct bugs in the new system. For those of you who waited for refunds from the first sale, I apologize for the delay. I personally made sure that everyone who requested a refund from that sale has received it.
Although the second sale went smoothly, we still had technical challenges supporting our customer base and the rapidly growing keyword database. Those who requested refunds on the second sale received them immediately because Power Pay was a dependable and honest payment processor.
So, here we are today. We’ve finally tamed the beast! It would have been nice to have waited until now and then launched with our current version, but hindsight is 20/20, and I learned so much along the way - lessons that I’ve tried to pass along with this post.
The Google Cash Detective is now an amazing competitive intelligence research service that offers specialized internet marketing training to hundreds of individuals no less than 6 times per week!
Currently, over 500 people are actively using the software and some people’s results are nothing short of spectacular. We are turning novices into pros, one at a time, all across the world.
The Google Cash Detective is not for sale at this time, yet I get requests for new trials every day. I promised that I would first take care of my current customers, and I am still trying to do exactly that.
For those of you who have been refunded, you will have another opportunity to try the software again. I don’t hold a grudge, and I can’t blame many of you who tried valiantly to use the software when it contained critical programming flaws.
Many of you were very helpful in identifying bugs, and many of you who stayed the course have contributed to the powerful working version we are using today. Thank you for all of your help and understanding.
I’d like to close this post with a reference to the mythological Phoenix. Mythology helps us to understand and cope with problems that we face in every day life.
“Only one Phoenix may exist at any given time, which makes it a solitary bird. It does not reproduce, which adds to its loneliness, as only its death will bring on another of its race. When the Phoenix feels its end approaching, it builds a nest with the finest aromatic woods, sets it on fire, and is consumed by his own flames. From the pile of ashes, a new Phoenix arises, young and powerful.”
The development of our software has followed a similar path, and with courage and determination, we have persevered and created the most powerful competitive analysis product available on the Internet today.
I know all of you face challenges, and I encourage you to build and rebuild until your objectives have been met. Setbacks are a part of life, and if you maintain your ambitions, setbacks aren’t that big of a deal. Simply, aim high and stay the course, however windy it may be.
The Google Cash Detective will again sell out, and I will continue my mission to spread cutting edge Internet Marketing Knowledge to all those who can use it. Further, the Google Cash Community will continue to grow and develop, providing opportunity to all who embrace it.
Stay tuned. The best is yet to come!
Best wishes on your success,
Chris Carpenter
